ABOUT MILE
Middlesex Institute for Lifelong Education (MILE) was created in 1993 for the purpose of providing a learning environment that enriches the intellectual, social, and cultural lives of adults aged 50 and over who share a love of lifelong learning.
MILE is sponsored by The Middlesex Community College Foundation Inc. They will act as MILE’s fiduciary to help carry on the organization’s mission at the Middlesex campus of CT State Community College. Our members are at all stages of their lives: retired, semi-retired or employed. Currently, our membership averages about 125 people from all walks of life and represents at least 35 area towns!
MILE offers classes in a wide range of disciplines without concern for credit, grades, or pre-requisites. Programs are often enhanced by field trips. We have both a Fall, Winter, and Spring semesters. The classes in the Fall and Spring are a mix of ZOOM and in-person classes. The classes in the Winter are only ZOOM classes. The in-person classes will be held in MxCC's Chapman Hall.
Lifelong learning begins today and continues forever. Take part in MILE's ever-evolving educational offerings and opportunities. We'd love for you to join us.

Become a Member
We invite you to visit us or attend an event. Our members are
more than happy to answer any questions you may have
about the organization and how you can join
Who Can Join? Anyone that is 50 years of age and over who has an interest in the wide variety of issues and topics we offer, and who wants to stay mentally alive.
Membership Fees This Fall we are offering three afternoon classes per week for seven weeks and the Great Decisions program runs for 5 weeks. Our Wednesday classes are via Zoom while the Tuesday and Thursday classes are in person in room 808AB of Chapman Hall at CT State Community College - Middlesex. If you choose to take the Great Decisions classes, they are held on Thursday mornings in room CH613. The single annual membership fee is now only $65.00 which allows members to attend as many presentation as they wish during the academic year of three sessions - Fall, Spring and a mini Winter Zoom session.
Last Fall 26 classes were offered. Spring will probably be the same and the winter session is usually 4 to 5 classes. The total is about 57 classes for $65, about $1.14 per class. Now, that is a bargain!
Additional fees for special material or books may apply for certain presentations and for Great Decisions. Some special trips may have additional fees associated with transportation and admission to the venues. Any additional fees are shown in the description for the presentation or trip.
In addition, your membership also allows you to take advantage of the facilities at MxCC, including the library and cafeteria.
How Can You Join? To join MILE, the first step is to fill out a Registration Form. Registration forms are collected at Orientation Meeting on the Fall and Spring semesters or can be mailed earlier to our membership chair, Elise.McDermott See the Registration Form for her mailing address. To help you decide which class to attend, consult the written descriptions and short videos by the presenters. The videos will be posted on the website semester page, when they are available. You can attend any class, but by registering it gives us an idea for the appropriate classroom size and number of possible handouts,

- Computer knowledge: Maintain website; email contact; prepare publications.
- Curriculum Committee: This is the “nuts and bolts” of MILE. The committee meets monthly throughout the year and is responsible for arranging all presenters for each semester during the academic year. Members of this committee suggest, research, coordinate, and book the many offerings of MILE. They introduce the speakers and write thank you notes. Coordination with MxCC includes room assignments and setups, mailings, etc. This committee has also been in charge of the Zoom presentations.
- Hospitality Committee: Volunteers are in charge of refreshments for MILE orientation meetings and for organizing the annual meeting luncheon. This includes obtaining supplies, setup and cleanup.
- The MILE View Committee produces our newsletter. Individual responsibilities include writing, editing, proofreading, taking photographs and meeting deadlines. A newspaper background is helpful.
- Membership: This committee handles MILE registrations at Orientation Meetings.
- Monitors: Monitors are responsible for the room setup including attendance sheet, water, break time, etc. They should arrive 15 minutes early for setup, and should also clean up after class.
- Posters & Brochures: Our posters and brochures need to be distributed and displayed. We hope we can get a member from each town to cover his / her town.
- Trips: Volunteers research and recommend educational and / or entertaining trips for MILE. There are many details to each trip, such as bus, food, tickets, etc.
Becoming an Instructor
MILE welcomes all types of instructors - from those who have taught in a university or school setting to those with little to no prior teaching experience who have a particular art, hobby or interest to share.
Such teaching is rewarded by the opportunity to work with mature and intelligent students drawn from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Their broad range of life experience and independence of thought challenge the instructor and enrich the exchange of ideas. In addition, for many instructors, this is the first time to teach without grades, homework and exams.

MILE: Enriching our lives, where learning never retires.
