Fall 2008 curriculum

Mornings  10:00 to 12:00                   Afternoons  1:00 to 3:00

The Fall semester runs from October 6 to November 14..  
 All classses will be held in Chapman Hall, MxCC.  unless
specifically noted otherwise.
 Directions to rooms will be posted.

March 17, 24 – AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC     *10 AM-12 NOON

A continuation of the Winter Class.   St Patrick’s Day class will emphasize Irish influences.  Course includes lecture, music examples, group discussion, and a sing-a-long.  Come learn and enjoy!

Presenter:  Barbara Arafeh, BMus, NE Cons. Music; MA, Columbia U.; Director/Conductor, Middletuners;  MILE member renowned for her music presentations.                                    *Note: Special Time

April 21 – Field Trip – Old Saybrook                 10 AM – 3:00 PM

  A remarkable 400 year history of the Old Saybrook Colony, through videos and discussion at The Hart House.  Lunch at Penny Lane Pub.  

Presenter:  Bob Czepiel, BA, Wesleyan U.; MBA, Wharton; retired from Wall St. 1996; Producer, Director, Writer, and Trustee of Old Saybrook Historical Society.

March 31 – WIND OVER WINGS: Birds of Prey           1-3:00 PM                           

  Live birds including an eagle will be present as their stories are told.

Presenter:  Hope Douglas, Founder of wild bird refuge; Pres. of CT Wildlife Rehabilitators Assoc.; teaches wildlife conservation.

April 7 – INDONESIA                                                       1-3:00 PM

  Using slides and lively and humorous narration, Jonathan will highlight his experiences and findings while traveling and studying the flora and fauna of the region. 

Presenter:  Jonathan Trouer-Trend, BS, Biology, UConn; Grad work, public health, UConn; Lifelong naturalist; Red Cross Public Health Researcher; Popular MILE presenter of Birding Babylon. 

March 25 – APPRECIATIVE LIVING:                          1-3:00 PM

Viewing Life’s Experiences in the Best Light.

  Lecture and discussion will explore the dynamics of changing thinking, to bring joy to living.

Presenter: Nancy Fightlin, Nursing, BC; Teacher; Counselor; Life Coach.  

April 14 – FORENSIC POLICE INVESTIGATIONS  1-3:00 PM

  A fascinating discussion of forensic police work, which does not happen in an hour – Reality versus TV. 

Presenter:  Detective Claudette Kosinski , a 12 year Hartford police officer; 25 homicide scenes processed; over 700 crime scenes; a wide-array of background training and experience; Vice President, CT Association of Women Police.

April 1 – INTRODUCTION TO AMERICAN GLASS  1-3:00 PM

  Historical background on depression, carnival and cut glass; a discussion of these, answering all the questions.  Members may bring sample glass (no more than 2) for review. 

Presenter:  Roserita Zeigler, CCSU; teacher (25 years) including Business  Ed. Dept head and Asst Principal, Bacon Academy; a long time glass student, teacher and lecturer; created promotional campaigns for Fenton Glass.
